Miekak fishing camp is located between lakes Alep and Lulep in remote Swedish Lapland. The camp lies secluded in verdant arctic birch woodland. The mountainous landscape is dotted with a patchwork of clear mountain streams and lakes making Miekak a location of breathtaking beauty.

The River Pieske (Pieskeströmmen) lies close to the fishing camp and offers some of the best fishing for arctic char in Sweden. The River Pieske is well-known to many Swedish anglers as a river populated by large, and often difficult-to-catch, arctic char and brown trout. Fish of up to up to 2 kg (4 lbs) are, however, caught regularly every season.

but often challenging fishing for wild artic char.

Fishing in Miekak is primarily for arctic char, the majority of fish caught weighing between 0.5 kg (1 lb) to 1 kg (approx. 2 lb). Fish of over 1 kg are not uncommon. The Miekak fishing region comprises 2100 ha of lakes and 10 km (7.5 miles) of rivers and streams. The beat on the River Pieske is 6.5 km (almost 4 miles) offering double-bank fly fishing only.

As of 2004, all fish between 30 and 55 cm must be returned to the water. This rule has been introduced because: 1) this particular size of fish reproduces well and 2) maintaining a stock of this size ensures a healthy population of fish of good catching size for the fisherman.

The 2.5 km beat on the Loddaströmmen (River Lodda) offers excellent, mixed fly- and spin fishing. The Lodda is a smaller stream than the Pieske, but is of almost equally high quality from the flyfisherman’s perspective. Several smaller streams and tributaries of the Lodda converge to form the unique "Aquarium”, a name coined by Swedish angler, and regular visitor to the region, Nils Färnström. In July 2007, the Aquarium offered fantastic fishing with arctic char and brown trout over 1 kg (2 lb) in weight being caught frequently. To the southeast are the streams of Sarta and Sartajokkas. The Sarta stream connects the Miekak lakes with Sartajaure, an underestimated stream with plenty of deep pools and near perfect conditions to support a good head of large arctic grayling and arctic char. Superb fishing for arctic char was to be had in these streams and lakes in the summer of 2007; 100 fish from 600 g (1 lb) to over 1 kg (2 lb) were caught on a single day!

Accommodation at Miekak fishing camp

Miekak fishing camp comprises 21, four-bed wooden lodges that are designed for self-catering. Access to boats provided for each lodge is included in the price. A small shop is available on site and is ideal for stocking up on provisions and refilling the flybox. Shower facilities and a sauna are available for a small additional charge. The traditional Laplander’s tent, which is large enough to accommodate a fireplace, is just the thing to gather round, unwind and discuss the day’s fishing exploits.

Four, six-bed lodges are available out in the mountain range surrounding Miekak; boats are also provided for each lodge. Two of these lodges are located at lake 830, one by lake Njarkalisjaure and one by the River Pieske.

For a minimum of four persons, we offer a special package week for arctic char and brown trout, which includes:

· Accommodation in a four-bed, self-catering lodge

· Guide for the week

· Access to the camp sauna

· Fishing permit

· Boat with outboard and petrol

· Farewell dinner provided on the final evening of the trip

Where and when we fish during the week is determined by the prevailing insect hatches. Naturally, a few days in the River Pieske with its unique pools, such as “mellanström”, “Strömporten” and “Puppaviken”, will be on the agenda for the week. In the rare event of poor fishing in the rivers and streams, a short helicopter trip to one of the lakes south of Miekak can be arranged. Lakes such as “lake 830” and connecting waters offer fish up to 5 kg (10 lb) in weight.

The trip includes transport by helicopter from Tjärnberg, 70 km west of Arjeplog.
Total price incl. tax: 8500 SEK. The trip can be combined with transfer from Stockholm Arlanda airport to Arvidsjaur airport, as well as transport to Tjärnberg heliport for an additional 3100 SEK per person. This price excludes the cost of a hotel stay in Arjeplog, should this be required.

Update from the 2007 season: Fishing for arctic char, trout and grayling was excellent for the majority of the season with the best of the fishing in the Lodda and Sarta in week 31. Catches of all three types of fish weighing 1 kg (2 lb) or more on the same day were reported. A single day on the Sarta stream produced a catch of around 100 arctic char weighing between 0.5 and 1.1 kg with 15-20 fish over 1 kg, as well as 28 trout and grayling. The largest trout weighed 1.8 kg (4 lb).

Miekak Exclusive is a package deal for the more experienced fisherman, requiring skill and stealth with both the nymph and dry fly.

During the week-long trip, a tour to the River Pieske is guaranteed, as are visits to other exciting waters in the area, such as the mountain plateau, Sarta and the River Lodda.
